Headache and Jaw Pain commonly referred to as TMJ.
TMJ describes a disorder of your temporomandibular joint. The TM joint itself is located directly in front of the ear and is commonly called the “jaw joint.” This joint is an anatomical orthopedic joint just like any other joint in your body and is susceptible to the same problems as all your joints. The key to the health of any joint is lubrication. Most disorders of the TMJ are related to the lack of lubrication in the joint space. Disorders of the TMJ are medical problems that require mainstream medical orthopedic treatments such as orthotics, medications and physical therapy.
Slow, gentle jaw exercises may help increase jaw mobility and healing. A recent study found that therapeutic jaw exercises lead to an earlier recovery from jaw pain. Often jaw problems resolve on their own in 1-2 weeks, but if you continue to have issues, see a physical therapist trained in TMJ disorders. If you have recently experienced TMJ pain and/or dysfunction, contact us at Lakeway Aquatic Therapy and Wellness Center. Our physical therapists will evaluate and treat these issues immediately. At LAWC we provide a multitude of treatments to decrease your jaw/headache pain such as ultrasound, deep heat and manual therapy, along with giving you specific exercises based on your individual needs.
