Physical Therapy for Neurological Disorders

Functional neurological disorder (FND) is a medical condition in which there is a problem with the functioning of the nervous system and how the brain and body sends and/or receives signals, rather than a structural disease process such as multiple sclerosis or stroke. FND can encompass a wide variety of neurological symptoms, such as limb weakness or seizures and gait disturbances.

Physical therapy is a major therapeutic intervention for individual with motor functional neurological disorders.

In a recent study 2019 Maggio Et. al reported: Physical Therapy is the first-line treatment for individual with functional limb weakness, gait disturbances, tremors, dystonia (involuntary muscle contractures) and other motor symptoms.

This study found that physical therapy helps with FND Functional Neurological Disorders in 4 (four) major ways:

• Demonstration of normal movement • Retraining movement • Challenging behaviors
